Assessment

Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement, nothing can be done without hope and confidence -
Helen Keller
Reverse design is very important in planning for teaching. Often educators are motivated to teach what is emergent or interesting. Articulating and fully understanding the big ideas, essential questions and objectives of your practice is central to effective education.
I have included some examples of formative assessment, and evaluative practices below.

Clockwork Class Starter
I used an assessment technique that not only uses assessment as learning for students, but it has cross-curricular connections with English and Art.
Students in my Science 8 classes created
Science Discovery Journals where each student had to decorate or artistically transform their cover of the journal to reflect their personal interest in science. The open-endedness of the project drew out many artistic, technical and creative skills in students.
I used the journal as a class starter, which not only focuses the students on the content and intentions of the lesson, but helps them develop their scientific literacy skills as well as their accountability to review.
